Side Swing

ShouldersForearmsCore

The side swing is one of the most underrated jump rope skills. You swing the rope to one side of your body without jumping through it, then return to a normal jump. It's an active rest technique (your legs get a break while your arms keep moving), and it's the building block for dozens of freestyle tricks and combos.

How to do side swing

  1. 1

Start with a basic bounce at a steady rhythm.

  2. 2

Bring both hands together to one side of your body — the rope swings alongside you.

  3. 3

The rope should make a loop beside your hip, not going under your feet.

  4. 4

On the next rotation, separate your hands back to normal position.

  5. 5

The rope goes over your head and you jump through as usual.

  6. 6

Practice on both sides: left swing, jump, right swing, jump.

Common mistakes

Breaking the rhythm during the swing

The rope keeps the same speed — only the direction changes. Don't pause between the swing and the jump.

Hands too far apart during the swing

Bring both hands close together on the same side. The closer they are, the better the loop forms.

Forgetting to keep bouncing

Even during the side swing, keep a small bounce going. This maintains your rhythm for the next jump.

Pro tips

  • Use side swings as an active rest during long jump rope sessions — your legs rest while your arms keep the rhythm.
  • The side swing is the entry point for criss-cross combos and freestyle tricks.
  • Try the pattern: jump, right swing, jump, left swing — it's a great warm-up sequence.
